AN OBSESSION TRADITION
I always inform my deckhand upon heading from Carolina to Mexico, that if we make it to Isla Mujeres, I will buy him a lobster dinner at the legendary Ballyhoo Bar & Grill the first night we get there..... if we do not make it to Isla Mujeres, no lobster dinner for him..... motivation always helps!!
GREAT LAST DAY OF A GREAT FISHING YEAR!
My scheduled group for Saturday could not make it, which was good for Paul O'brien & his crew from Floriday & New Jersey, who came a day early as Sunday was going to be a blow day for them. Weather was beautiful and calm....we started the day boating some 10-20# blackfin tuna, and then ran north a ways and hit the yellowfins twice, boating 4 each time, yellowfins ranging from 20-30#. On Tuesday we haul the boat out and spend a few weeks in the boatyard getting ready to head to Mexico a day or so after Christmas..... a handful of good days still available if interested!
DAVE PENDERGRAPH & CREW FROM WARRENTON, VA BOATED A SUPER MEATFISH GRANDSLAM...WAHOO, DOLPHIN, BLACKFIN AND YELLOWFIN TUNA!
FEDERICO GENOSE ZERB, FROM CENTERVILLE, VA, & HIS CREW BOATED A MIXED BAG OF BLACKFIN TUNA, KING MACKEREL, DOPHIIN AND TWO WAHOO, INCLUDING A 48# CITATION EARNING WAHOO THAT FEDERICO BOATED.
JIM GOFF's CREWS CATCH ON SUNDAY.
Weather has kept us tied up since then, but we should be fishing again on SUNDAY.
WOMEN ONCE AGAIN CATCH THE 'BIG ONES"
Fortunately the guys brought Mary & Michelle fishing yesterday. This was a fun group.... along with Todd, Butch & Fred, all from New Jersey, they boated some blackfin tuna in the morning.... lot of marks but not many bites.... we headed to deeper water in the afternoon and got lucky and found some yellowfins, and then as we were cranking in the lines at the end of the day, we hooked a wahoo for a perfect ending to a fun day!
TOM PALMER BOATED A CITATION EARNING 42# WAHOO, AND HIS CREW FROM MARYLAND CAUGHT A MIXED BAG OF BLACKFIN AND YELLOWFIN TUNA TO GO WITH A PAIR OF WAHOO!!
ON SUNDAY THE BENYO CLAN FROM NEW JERSEY & PENNSYLVANIA BOATED BLACKFIN TUNA IN THE MORNING AND YELLOWFIN TUNA IN THE AFTERNOON, ALONG WITH A 30# WAHOO!
ED WATSON & HIS CREW FROM MARYLAND BOATED A NICE CATCH OF BLACKFIN TUNA ALONG WITH ONE YELLOWFIN TUNA ON MY FIRST DAY BACK FROM MY SURFISHING/CAMPING TRIP TO PORTSMOUTH ISLAND.
RANDY WEBB & CREW LOAD THE BOAT WITH MAHI AND YELLOWFIN TUNA!
At 10 yesterday morning we had just a few small blackfin tuna and nothing was biting and things were looking dismal.... worked offshore where a few mahi were being caught and luckiy stumbled into a log which was holding a school of dolphin which Randy and crew caught a bunch of on light tackle.... Relieved at least we had a catch, I worked back through some good bottom where we caught tuna earlier in the week, but where I had no bites that morning, when damm if we didn't hook a double header, and after boating them another double header and then it was game on!! LIMIT OF YELLOWFINS IN 2 HOURS!!
A DOUBLE MEATFISH GRAND SLAM FOR CLAYTON, NEIL & WILL WHO HAVE ALL FISHED WITH ME FOR 20 YEARS AND WE HAVE HAD SOME VERY GOOD CATCHES AND TODAY, THOUGH FISHING FOR YELLOWFIN WAS VERY SLOW, THE GUYS BOATED A VERY NICE CATCH!
TODAY WAS CLAYTON HELMS, FROM INDIAN TRAIL, NC DAY AS HE STARTED THE DAY BOATING A 35# WAHOO, AND THEN HE BOATED, AFTER A 15 MINUTE EXCITING WITH LOTS OF JUMPING, BATTLE, A 47# 'SQUAREHEAD' BIG DOLPHIN.
JEFF BEAM AND CREW HAD GOOD YELLOWFIN TUNA ACTION YESTERDAY!
ANDREW HOTTEN & FRIENDS FROM ELON COLLEGE IN NORTH CAROLINA BOATED THEIR LIMIT OF YELLOWFIN TUNA ON A CALM BEAUTIFUL DAY TO BE ON THE WATER!
YESTERDAY WE HAD GOOD TUNA ACTION IN PRETTY BLENDED WATER & TODAY I SPENT THE WHOLE MORNING CATCHING NOTHING IN PRETTY WATER WHERE YOU WOULD EXPECT THE TUNA TO BE. MOVED INTO UGLY GREEN WATER AND BILLY POSS & CREW PICKED AWAY AT THE YELLOWFIN, ONE AND TWO AT A TIME TILL THEY ENDED UP WITH A NICE CATCH.
FIRST DAY AFTER STORM AND THE TUNA WERE RIGHT WHERE WE LEFT THEM!
Bob Forehand and crew, from tidewater VA boated their limit of tuna along with a 32# WAHOO and a dolphin to give them a 'MEATFISH GRAND SLAM' and a lot of good eating.... they deserved it as they got the #@#L kicked out of them in rough seas all day long!
READY TO GO FISHING
Got the Obsession back to Pirates Cove from my hurricane hideout on the Intercoastal Waterway at Coinjock Marina. All is well on the Obsession, and we hope are scheduled to fish Friday thru Tuesday. The Outer Banks is slowly recovering..... electricity now restored to much of the beach.... flood waters gradually receeding..... low lying areas around the sound, particularly down at Hatteras and Ocracoke got hammered with soundside flooding compounded by heavy rains..... Meteorologists might need a refresher coase in hurricane predictions!
NO..... FISHING IS GOOD BUT ALL THE BOATS ARE NOT OUT FISHING!
KINDA QUITE AT PIRATES COVE RIGHT NOW... THE OBSESSION IS UP THE INTERCOASTAL WATER WAY AT COINJOCK MARINA WHICH IS LESS PRONE TO TIDAL SURGE AND SOUNDSIDE FLOODING. HOPEFULLY MATTHEW GOES OUT TO SEA SO WE CAN GO FISHING TOWARDS THE END OF NEXT WEEK!
DAMM! GREAT FALL TUNA FISHING AND HERE COMES A HURRICANE!!
Matt Keener & friend from Ohio fished with us on Monday and had great action, catching their limit of yellowfin tuna by noon! Unfortunately, I had to move the OBSESSION up the intercoastal to Coinjock to sit out the hurricane, which now looks like it might not, hopefully come this way.... ANYWAY, no fishing this weekend but hopefully we get going again next week!
ROBERT BARNES & CREW LOADED THE BOAT WITH TUNA AND SOME NICE GAFFERS AND THE BOX WAS FULL AROUND NOON!

I HATE SOUTHWESTERS THIS TIME OF YEAR!
With great expectations, John & Tony & Becky & Paul headed offshore for their final of three great days..... when we had to run 8 miles further offshore to get to the water we fished in yesterday, we were surprised/concerned it had moved that far, and unfortunately, not all the fish were still in it... we scrapped out a decent day, catching three white marlin, Paul boated a 45# yellowfin on light tackle and everyone caught some nice dolphin.....still lot of white marlin up north so more great days of white marlin fishing may well still be ahead of us!!
EPIC DAY!
Big John Knight & Tony Cameron fish with me in Mexico for a week and for white marlin this week each year for 4 or 5 days, so it was special for me that these guys had a great day as they deserved & appreciated it! They hooked 4 double headers, one triple header and I think one time we had 4 whites on and a wahoo and boated the wahoo and released 2 of the whites. Ended the day with a double header and then a triple header.... the after we went 0 for the first three the guys hooked almost everything.... Big John caught a 46# citation earning wahoo on light tackle.... All in all action packed day!!
POST HURRICANE SURPRISE!!
Sometimes after hurricanes, the offshore waters are a stirred up mess and the marlin vanish till the next year, so today when we finally got out after the weekend storm, Big John Knight, Tony Cameron, Paul Winter & Becky Hucks and myself we were plesantly surprised to find pretty water and great marlin fishing as everyone caught a bunch of marlin today! ON the downside I had a group cancel three days on me next week and the weather looks great and fishing should be excellent for marlin.... right now I have Monday, Wed & Fri Sept 12, 14, & 16 available... would highly recommend it!!
FISHING BEFORE THE TROPICAL STORM!
Can't say that I was excited about going yesterday, with tropical storm warnings posted, but Roy Wilson & his family had driven a long ways from Georgia and wanted to try it, so off we went.... we fished close to home and had good fishing..... Roy enjoyed watching his daughter Alicia catch 3 sailfish and Miranda catch two sailfish.
A GREAT DAY ON THE WATER
Calm before the storm, we found a hugh bed of grass and caught all the dolphin they wanted, set out just offshore of the grass and didn't have all the baits out when we hooked one out of two white marlin.... by the end of the day, Greg Tait & Roy VanWick, from Florida and Bruce Nager, from Florida and now Charlottesville released 4 white and 3 sailfish, including a day ending double header, along with a few blackin tuna for sushi!!!
MARK MCCLELLAN, FROM GEORGIA, CHAD TAYLOR, FROM IN DIANA, & RICHARD SMITH FROM MICHIGAN ALL RELEASED WHITE MARLIN AND TOM SHEIKH, FROM INDIANA ENDED THE DAY WITH A 42 # CITATION EARNING WAHOO!!
