Archived Fishing Reports
COMPUTER CRASHED
Sorry about not positing fishing reports but my computer crashed...anyway finally back on line with Ruth Anns....fishing was great up until a few days ago and has recently slowed up with passage of cold front but we will get back on them sails hopefully tomorrow.....I will post some reports and photos in the next few days.....
DAMM TH BONITOS!!!
JIm Stokew, Matt King, Rob Caudle & Bill Darr, all from Virginia and down here with their wives..... had all the action they could handle today, unfortunately of the wrong variety as the little tunny moved in on the sailfish grounds in mid morning and we could not keep a ballyhoo in the water....went thru over 125 baits.... ended up having to pull strips and bait and switch... the guys caugh 6 sailfish total, hooked their own fish bonito action made it a hard day for everyone!! Photo below compliments of Big Johh Knight!
GREAT LAST DAY OF FISHING
GOOD BITE IN CHALLANGING CONDITIONS
Dan Bowen, Bill Bryan & Don Heisey, all from North Carolina/Mt Olive Pickles hung on for dear life as seas were a good 8 ft, but fish were biting, in the morning around a bunch of birds, than a steady trolling bite, and then we ended the day with some good bait ball action, they guys catching 27 sailfish out of at least 45 bites.... they were hard to hook or keep hooked today. THE PHOTO BELOW COMPLIMENTS OF BIG JOHN KNIGHT FROM HIS ACTION THE OTHER DAY!
GOOD START AND A STRONG FINISH!
With Big John Knight, Tony Cameron & Ed Williams fishing their second of three days, we started north of the fleet and found good action to start the day, the guys hooking 5 singles in 5 circles, than, with free jumpers starting to show, we hooked a double header and while doing battle watched a horde of sails tailing down sea next to the boat.... we were licking our lips thinking 'Game ON', but damm if we never had another bite in the next hour and all the sign of life vanished..... had to relocate but couldn't get going around the fleet, but late in the day we found some action, with several singles, and then to end the day a double then two triple headers, with John & Tony hooking most of the fish, giving them 15 releases out of 24 bites for the day!
BIG JOHN KNIGHT, TONY CAMERON & ED WILLIAMS RELEASED 18 SAILFISH TODAY.... HAD 35+ BITES, MANY AROUND BIRDS.....GOOD FISHING
GOOD FISHING AND 12 MILES OFF THE ISLAND!!
RUDY ESPINOZA & MICHELLE BELTRAN, FROM MIAMI, CAUGHT 15 SAILFISH IN HALF A DAY, MANY AROUND A BUNCH OF BIRDS WITH BAIT AND SAILFISH ON TOP.
CRAIG SPENCER & CHASTITY WITH ONE OF 26 SAILFISH THEY & BART CARY AND CARSON CAUGHT TODAY AND WE AGAIN CAME IN EARLY AT 3 PM.....THEY CAUGHT TWO TRIPLE HEADERS AND SEVERAL DOUBLE HEADERS.
SAILFISHING CONTINUES TO BE EXCELLENT CLOSE TO THE ISLAND!
Bart Cary, frlom Tallahasee & Craig Spencer from Boyten Beach and their ladies had steady action releasing 24 sailfish out of maybe 35 bites and they had enough action so we went home early afternoon with the fish still biting. They are fishing tomorrow, Wednesday with us, but due to a cancellation, I still have Thursday thru Sunday available if someone is looking for a quick trip to warm weather and good fishing!!
A GREAT DAY!
We had a rash of cancellations recently and had today open so Joe & I invited Juan, the owner of legandary fisherman hangout Faynes Bar & Grill and his lunatic bartender Chaggy (damm if he ain't poured me many a drink) to come fishing with us..... hard to sit around the dock when the fish are biting....anyway, had a great day..... in 4 hours fishing they caught 16 sailfish including several double headers......pretty much non stop action!
SOMETIMES ITS GOOD TO HAVE YOUR FLIGHT CANCELLED!
Dan Bailey fished with us last week and his flight was cancelled so he stayed today and friend Patrick Nutt, from Florida flew in and we had calm fun day of fishing, the guys catching 15 sailfish out of 24 bites, most all in the afternoon and all hooked themselves.
A CHANGE OF PACE!
I had a cancellation for today and tomorrow, so my buddy Dean, who runs the 72 ft American yacht DAN TEO felt sorry for me and invited me and mate Joe to ride along with him & his owner......in LUXURY! Enclosed flying bridge was a comfortable change of pace on a rather salty day offshore and fishing was very good.... we caught 10 for maybe 18 bites in a half a day, and I even caught a couple myself!
GREAT FISHING AGAIN
Craig, Michael, Dan & Tom had awesome action today, catching two quadruple headers (on one we burned off the fifth fish) and numerous double headers .... all trolling action but often while fighting fish, several would cruise in on the teasers and the guys would hook them next to the boat...... the caught 31 sails out of aroound 50 bites, hooking all their own fish!!

FINALLY SOME FISH SHOW UP!!
Dan Birley, Michael Huling, Tom Berry & Craig Sudbrink, have fished with me many times down here in the past, and did a great job hooking fish today....they caught and released 28 out of 40 bites....Dan was the hig hook with 13. The guys caught a triple header and two double headers and a few mahi for dinner!
ROUGH! ROUGH!
Wind was blowing northwest about 30 and only Fin on the Qualifier and the Obsession went today.... only chance for my crew of Pete Cook and family from Minnesota....pretty damm rough but they hung in there and enjoyed a salty day on the high seas......saw quite a few fish chase baits but water turned sandy ugly green and they just would not bite...... caught one out of two fish that bit and that was the day.
FISHING GETTING BETTER!
Good action in a half day of fishing..... Matt Sasser & crew from Atlanta released 7 sailfish, had 8 hooked up and saw a few more in a good half day of fishing.
A LITTLE MORE ACTION TODAY!
After two blow days due to 25+knot north winds and slow fishing, Mike & Tom had a very pleasant day on the water.... though action still is not what we hope for down here, there was a little pickup today..... we saw 8, had shots at 7 and Mike & Tom each released a pair..... though we had no action in the afternoon a lot of bait started showing up so maybe things are about to get going down here.
CAN'T SAY WE DIDN"T HAVE A LOT OF ACTION YESTERDAY!
TODAY WAS A STRUGGLE!
Very rough this morning, we were barely able to make 10 knots heading offshore, just us and the Keen M went fishing but we could not get very far...... had a few bites..... both Tom Noonan and Mike Eakin caught sailfish and a handful of dolphin..... should be better running conditions tomorrow, so our plan is to burn some fuel, run north and hopefully find some fish coming this way.
FIRST DAY FISHING IN MEXICO, 2016
Could have gone better.....not a lot of fish around yet....we hooked three sails and Mike Eakin and Tom Noonan released two sails......about mid day a cold front moved in and we headed in early....hopefully some fishing are tailing in here with the weather....these guys have fished with me down here for 15 years, have seen the good and not so good..... hopefully we show them more action latter this week.....they fish four more days, so hopefully things pick up!
OFF TO MEXICO
We left North Carolina on Dec 30, ran nonstop, except to top off with fuel in Morehead City and Fernadina Beach, FL for 37 hours and got to Ft Pierce FL, around 680 miles total. Weather was great and we were ready to roll on to Mexico but the boat travelling with me had some problems and being New Years day and then a weekend, he could not get replacement parts & things worked on till today in Ft Lauderdale. We ran down to Key West yesterday, so with crew Joe Vonetti & Mark Dunlevy, we are eating grouper, hogfish and stones crabs and drinking rum waiting for the Qualifier to get down here..... forecast looks good for a crossing later in the week. We start fishing on Saturday and some sailfish have already showed up down there.
BOAT YARD BLUES!
We spent a few weeks in December tuning the Obsession up for our trip to Mexico around New Years day. Fortunately no major problems or holdups.
FINALLY THE WEBSITE IS WORKING AGAIN!
Back in late November, the weekend after Thanksgiving, we had our last fishing trip with Dru Manuel & his wife Janet & the kids.... fishing was kinda slow, but they boated 4 1/2 yellowfin (damm them sharks) but the highlight of the day was 11 year old Lily boating two 30-35# wahoo!
FEDERICO GENOSE-ZERBI AND CREW WERE HAVING DECENT YELLOWFIN TUNA FISHING IN THE MORNING, UNTIL WE BATTLED A DAMM SHARK FOR AN HOUR HOPING IN WAS A BIGEYE AND BY THE TIME IT BIT US OFF THE BITE WAS OVER!
CHRIS MORELY & CREW WERE 1/3 OF A YELLOWFIN SHY OF THIER LIMIT YESTERDSAY . NICE CATCH IN SPITE OF TOUGH LUCK LOOSING SEVERAL OTHER TUNA TO SHARKS AND GETTING VIOLATED BY A HORDE OF WAHOO!
BEAUTIFUL SUNSET!
Big Al on the Country Girl and I got a late start yesterday as we had to follow the dredge out the inlet to get on our plotters the new channel they have dug out that is as yet unmarked.....good water for now at least..... Fishing was not so good....conditions were excellent and we marked tuna but they were not biting....neither boat had a tuna bite, but my crew of Paul Ebert and friends have fished me a long time and we reminisced on some great catches we have had in the past...they had a very pleasant and adventurous day on the water in spite of slow fishing and look forward to our next fishing trip next spring.....a few dolphin and king mackerel were all we caught....blowing now but we will try again on Sunday.
FISHING TOMORROW!
We fished a few days last weekend and caught a handful of yellowfin tuna, but fishing was not great....lot of fish around but water was cold and greeen and they did not bite very well for us..... Weather has kept everyone at the dock the last few days, but some boats should be fishing today, and we are scheduled to fish the next four days.
BEST YELLOWFIN FISHING OF THE FALL!
Very sketchy getting thru the narrow low spans of the bridge, shallow water as the US Corp of Engineers is apparently incapable of getting the inlet dredged....they get paid whether they do the job or not.....lot of boats cancelling trips due to the danger, but my group was game today inspite of rainy weather and it paid off....Tom Lynch, John Parker, Nathan Ames and crew boated their limit of yellowfin tuna by 1 PM and we headed in early to dry off!
ED WATSON & CREW BOATED A NICE CATCH OF YELLOWFIN TUNA WITH FEW BLACKEN MIXED IN, INSPITE OF SLOW MORNING AND SOME HARD LUCK PULLING THE HOOK ON TOO MANY FISH1
SUPER MEATFISH GRAN SLAM!
The inlet is closed as the main and south spans are unnavigable, but there is barely enough water to go thru a narrow low span and I told Keith Mueller and crew, from Mechanicsburg, PA there was no guarantees we would make it, but thank the lord, we did and weather was nice offshore.....tuna fishing was not great but wahoo fishing was good and Keith boated a citation earning 55# wahoo for the highlight of the day, other than getting past the bridge.
MICHAEL NEWMAN, FROM RICHMOND, VA, BOATED A CITATION EARNING 44# WAHOO ON AN OTHERWISE SLOW DAY!
OFF TO PORTSMOUTH ISLAND I GO!!!
ROB ANDERSON & CREW, FROM NORTHERN VIRGINIA & RICHMOND AREA, BOATED A NICE CATCH OF 25-30 LB YELLOWFIN, INCLUDING SIX AT ONE TIME!
We have a charter tomorrow, then I will be camping out & drum fishing on Portsmouth Island all next week.....will be back for my charters next weekend!
NEIL BRUCK, WHO HAS FISHED WITH ME FOR 20 YEARS RELEASED A LATE SEASON WHITE MARLIN TO START THE DAY, AND IT WAS ALL DOWNHILL AFTER THAT....BEAUTIFUL WEATHER BUT THE FISH TOOK A DAY OFF!
THIRTEEN YEAR OLD JACAOB SABBAGH CATCHES FISH OF THE DAY!
John Sabbagh, from Huntersville, NC planned the fishing trip for his son to catch a big fish..... conditions changed from Friday when we had awesome blackfin tuna action as the current increased and the fish were not biting....so we roamed around and pretty good luck anyway....hooked a triple header of yellowfin, which three generations of Sabbagh's boated, then another triple header, again father & son team boating a pair of yellowfin and a blackfin tuna at one time....then to end the day thirteen year old Jacob Sabagh battled for a lunker for 10 minutes before boating a citation earning 44# WAAAHOOOO!! Congratulations Jacob!!
ROCKING BLACKFIN TUNA ACTION!
Bill Mouille & crew from North Carolina had great action all day boating a box full of blackfin tuna around birds.
LONG WAY FOR A FEW YELLOWFIN
Jeff Huddleston and crew boated a single and a five banger of yellowfin in the morning, but not many bites for anyone as we ran way up north to a warm body of water that should have held more fish.
DOUBLE MEATFISH GRANDSLAM!
Steve Mazursky & crew boated a pair of 30-35# wahoo to go along with a nice catch of blackfin tuna and dolphin on a very rough day!
