Fishing Reports & PhotosDAMM IF THEM TUNAS STILL AIN'T OUT THERE!!
Harold Ames, from King George, VA, brought his family out fishing Sunday while on the Outer Banks for the Holidays.... we had to delay a day due to weather, and getting across the bar at Oregon Inlet was adventurous.... kinda Hawaii five- oh ohish, but once we got thru that mess the day went great..... did not take long to locate the yellowfins and once we did it was steady action for three hours, which is all it took for the Ames family to catch their limit of 20 -25 lb yellowfin ..... Linda, Angela and Andrea, all from New Mexico, kicked the guys butts in the process of catching most of the fish!!
![]() OBSESSION FISHING REPORTS UPDATE
We are in the process of updating and hopefully improving the fishing reports section of my OBSESSION website..... while you are here, just to let you know, I will be posting fishing reports from Mexico beginning around the middle of the month, if all goes well in our attempt to get there after New Years.
The photo attached is one of Greg Davis from Pittsburg with his long sought after and first wahoo caught with us this past November.... the fish was a 40+ lb citation earning critter. ![]() TUNA FISHING DON'T GET NO BETTER THEN THIS!!
Rocco Cipriano and his crew from Virginia and Long Island, NY were blown out last weekend, but rescheduling the trip for yesterday worked out great..... weather was good and fishing was fantastic..... when we got on the fish, Rocco and crew boated their limit in 3 hours of steady action.... only twice did we have 4 fish on at one time, the rest were just singles and doubles but action right along.... all 20 -25 lb class yellowfins.
Only have one more scheduled trip the day after Christmas, but would be interested in taking one or two more in the next two weeks.... we hauled the boat out last week, did some maintenance for the trip to Mexico, and got the OBSESSION back in the water on Friday so we could fish yesterday.... now we will just clean her up, check things out and load up for Mexico, but with the excellent tuna fishing right now, and it should hold up at least thru the month, if interested in a yellowfin tuna trip between now and Christmas weekend, give me call! ![]() T- SHIRTS & HATS FOR SALE
Had a charter yesterday but gale warnings kept us from going.....have a charter next Saturday.... Will be hauling the boat out the following Monday for hopefully a short stay in the boatyard , then back in the water if all goes well in 2 weeks and one last charter the day after Christmas and then loading the boat for Mexico with Jan 3-4 departure the plan.
Sold out on last batch so I ordered a few more hats and t-shirts incase anyone needs a stocking stuffer. T-SHIRTS: I have M, L, XL & XXL in Bluish, Greenish, Blackish & White Short Sleeve Costs are $20/T-shirt and $15/hat or visor + ShippingCost ( 4.95 for one shirt or hat; 5.75 for two shirts or hats; $7.10 for 3 shirts or hats) check can be sent to Jeff Ross 3102 S. Ocean View Ct. Nags Head, NC 27959 ![]() GREAT TUNA FISHING!
Long time customer Jim McCurtain & his dad and crew from northern Virginia had non stop action, boating their limit of 20-25 lb yellowfin tuna while Ron Wiltfong, from Greenwood, MO, who joined the group to fill in an extra slot, boated a citation 40 lb wahoo....one of two boated as well. This fishing should hold up thru early December if not longer.
AT THIS TIME I HAVE THE FOLLOWING DATES AVAILABLE FOR 2009 NOVEMBER: NOV 30; DECEMBER: DEC 1-4; DEC 5; ![]() THEM DAMM WAHOOS HAD THEIR WAY WITH US!
Must have had 15 or more wahoo bites today.....they got an entire squid chain teaser, I lost track of the hooks and seawitches they got.... lost two right at the boat but Tom Palmer & his crew from northern Virginia did put three 30 pounders in the box go go along with a nice catch of 20-25 lb yellowfins, in spite of some terrible luck with the tunas also.... had 5 bites one time and only one stayed on the hook..... pulled two more off right at the boat..... oh.... hit happens on rough days.....try again tomorrow!
![]() GOOD FISHING TILL MONSOON HIT US!
Mark Lynch & crew from Maryland were hanging on in rough seas but working on a nice catch.....they already had their meatfish grand slam.....wahoo, mahi & tuna.....when the winds breezed up more, seas built up and we were forced to head in early as the two hour boat ride turned into a bone jarring, teeth rattling, 3 hour, head to, ordeal....probably three 10,000 gallons of water over the hard top.....but we made it!
![]() FANTASTIC TUNA FISHING!
Due to slow business for all charterboats in the area, and marginal weather and sea conditions, only one other boat fished yesterday.... bad for the boats crews but fun if you are out there, cause with no boating pressure, coming up with a good catch is easier... Long time customer and friend Greg Davis, from Pittsburg, brought out a crew of Starkist Tuna employes and inspite of choppy conditions, fishing was outstanding... by noon we had our limit of yellowfin tuna and to end the day Greg boated his first wahoo ever, a citation earning 41 lb fish... with our late season mahii, it was meatfish grandslam for the crew as well.
![]() GOOD TUNA FISHING AS WE FINALLY GET A BREAK IN THE WEATHER
Mark Rangitsch and his partner Cotton, from Cheyenne, Wyoming boated their limit of yellowfin tuna by lunch time, inluding a chaotic 6-banger.... they deserved good fishing after the adventurous crossing of the bar in Oregon Inlet which was impressive after the northeaster we've had the last few days.
![]() NORTHEASTER HAMMERS OUTER BANKS...some photos!
This is a access ramp now covered in sand fences and walkways that used to go over the dunes!
![]() MORE PHOTO's of NORTHEASTERS DAMAGE!
This is the Quality Inn in Nags Head that I have recommended in the past.....can't believe it is still standing....I will not recommend it any more!
![]() MORE NORTHEASTER PHOTOS
This is a walkway over a sand dune.....or at least where one was to begin the summer....looks to me that anwhere from 5-30 feet of dunes was washed away, along with several cottages, untold miles of sand fences and by the looks of the lumber on the beach, lots of dune crossings.....could be a good stimulus package for local builders.
![]() LIFE EXPLAINED......A GOOD PERSPECTIVE!!
A lot of truth to this!
Life:Explained A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them. "Not very long," answered the Mexican. "But then, why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?" asked the American. The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family. The American asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?" "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. I have a full life." The American interrupted, "I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat." "And after that?" asked the Mexican. "With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge new enterprise." "How long would that take?" asked the Mexican. "Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years," replied the American. "And after that?" "Afterwards? Well my friend, that's when it gets really interesting," answered the American, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!" "Millions? Really? And after that?" asked the Mexican. "After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends." And the moral of this story is: ......... Know where you're going in life... you may already be there. ![]() WAHOOS & TUNAS
Mike Boyette, from Madison Heights, Va & his crew from Virginia enjoyed a calm fall day with some decent tuna and wahoo action. Weather is looking bad thru the weekend but I have some trips next week so we are looking forward to getting back out there when winds subside.....good sign of tuna which did not bite well last week but should turn on again.
![]() SATURDAY.....MEATFISH GRAND SLAM WITH A CITATION WAHOO!
David Tooker and his crew of munchie maniacs lucked out with a bluebird Saturday after a stormy Friday..... lot of boats resulted in some slower tuna fishing but we found a change with some wahoo on it and had about 8 bites, lost a bunch of hooks, but the guys did a great job boated 3, including a citation earning 48 lb wahoo boated by Michael Maher, from Torrington, CT. We also had a small dolphin that did not make the photo!
![]() DOUBLE MEATFISH SLAM WITH TWO CITATION WAHOO'S!!
David Tooker and his crew, from Connecticut, fished again today and weather was again beautiful, tuna jumping everywhere, but lots of boats and not as many bites from the tuna as you would have expected.....nevertheless we came up with a nice catch of blackfin tuna, yellowfin tuna, mahi mahi and 3 wahoo, including a 37 lb fish and two citation earning fish....a 41 lb fish boated by David Tooker from Middleton CT, and a 43 lb wahoo boated by Phil Eichman, from Canaan, CT.
![]() LIMIT OF TUNA IN TWO HOURS!!
After postponing this trip a week due to bad weather ( which has been just about this entire fall), David Pendergraph and crew from Northern Va enjoyed some outstanding tuna fishing.....we started off slow, not getting any bites while some other boats had some action but a 10:15 we finally got on an area of fish and hit a few, then a few more and then had five on at once and in by noon we had our limit after 2 hours of non stop action.
![]() SLOW MORNING BUT A GREAT AFTERNOON!
Richard Moseby and crew from Virginia boated a nice catch of 15-25 lb yellowfin tuna after a slow morning during which I just could not get over the fish, but we got going after lunch and ended up with a boxful of tuna. Of course today it is blowing 25-30 Northeast and we a blown out again, which sucks cause every day we get out we come up with a good catch of tuna but the damm winds have been unrelenting.
![]() BIG SEAS DIDN'T SLOW THESE GUYS UP!
I told Jim McCurtain, Bud Armstrong & Crew from northern VA that the seas were 7-10 ft and wind was 20+ but supposed to fall out and they said lets go, and I needed to make some money so with only 2 other boats venturing offshore, we safely got across the inlet bar which was adventureous, and though we only made 17 knots heading offshore, fishing conditions were better than I expected and we even boated a nice catch of yellowfin tuna inspite of having some tuff luck, pulling hooks on a couple and getting raped by a few big wahoos.
![]() CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO OF THE SAILFISH WE CAUGHT LAST WEEK!
We have been blown out the last 4 days but hoping weather and winds moderate and we get back out on Friday....anyway check out this video of the small sailfish we caught last week......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QhxLeQk5tA

FANTASY MEATFISH GRAND SLAM AND A LATE SEASON SAILFISH!
Tom Carrado and crew from northern Virginia enjoyed action throughout the day, first boating a few yellowfin tuna, and then when that action proved to be slower than the day before, we ran offshore to a weed line and had great action on small school dolphin, boating a limit on spinning rods, and just as we were finishing up on the dolphin David Craven, from Vienna, VA hooked and boated and then released a tiny sailfish on a very light spinning rod , about like the one we caught earlier in the year, maybe 2 1/2 feet long total including the bill, maybe 5-6 lbs and cute as could be....jumped once 10 feet from the boat.....pretty cool. We ran back in shore and caught a few more yellowfin tuna, a few blackfin tuna and a 25 lb wahoo to give us a 4 species meatfish slam!! Have a busy week coming up.....praying for good weather.
![]() EXCELLENT YELLOWFIN TUNA FISHING
Yesterday was the first day boats got out after a spell of rough weather and tuna fishing was very good with several boats catching their limits! WIth no charter till this weekend, boatwork, varnishing and catching speckled trout on the beach took me in!
SOMETIMES THINGS JUST DON'T GO YOUR WAY!
After a stretch of slow bookings, I started this week scheduled to fish charters Tuesday thru Thursday and Saturday thru Monday...... at least that was the plan!! Unfortunately, Monday night my wife fell down the stairs and at midnight I took her to the hospital where they set her broken left wrist and dislocated right thumb....I got her home at 4 that morning, headed to the boat and arranged for another captain to take Jennifer Balonek & Lee Williams and their crew from Virginia Beach fishing and I headed home to be a nursemaid...... Fishing off course was excellent and they boated a limit of yellowfin tuna including a 55 and a 70 lb fish. Weather was too rough for any of us to get out the next two days, but of course Friday, when I did not have a trip a few boats were able to get out, and had excellent fishing.... the one boat from Pirates Cove that fished caught their limit of tuna.... Today I met my party at the boat, but with 20-25 knot winds offshore and a 9 ft seas, no boats were able to get out. Forecast for the next two days looks terrible, and of course when the wind is supposed to subside on Tuesday, I have no scheduled trips till late in the week..... I guess its back to the surf in search of more red drum!!
![]() TILEFISH SAVE THE DAY!
Kevin Gilbert & crew fished with us on Friday, and though sea conditions were good, tuna fishing was slow....one boat hit the tunas several times just a few miles above us, so I tried patiently trolling that direction, hoping to find some untouched fish between us, till I saw 15 boats below us steaming to the one hot spot, so rather than getting there last, we ran 4 miles as well, but as you would expect, when everyone got there the bite shut off and now we were all packed in a tight bunch of boats doing not much!....ANYWAY, only had one tuna bite all day, so late that afternoon we ran to some good bottom and caught a limit of 5-12 lb tilefish the last hour and a half of the day......YESTERDAY, tuna fishing improved for the boats that went with an average of 8-10 tuna to the boat, with a few bigeyes boated.....we will be fishing again from Tuesday thru Sunday....meanwhile I will continue to chase them old red drum on the beach!!
![]() GOOD RED DRUM FISHING!
With a few too many days off the last week, I got to spend some evenings on the beach and had very good success DRUM FISHING.....beached a 35 lb fish one night, then last Wednesday night I beached a pair of 45 lb fish, and the following night I beached a 45 and a 50 lb fish, the latter dragging me about 1/4 mile down the beach as the wind and current were rolling!
![]() GREAT EXPECTATIONS UNFULFILLED!
After great tuna fishing and an impressive sign of fish over a 8 miles on Friday, we Jerry Dew, Sr and crew headed offshore on Saturday hoping to match his son's crew's catch on Friday. After dodging heavy rain and lightning storms all the way out, weather moderated somewhat and we had action immediately, hooking 4 yellowfins right out of the gate, but only boated one of these. After the initial blast, action slowed up for the entire fleet....we hooked 4 more a few hours later, and boated three of them but we coverd 25+ miles in the course of the day, but never found the fish we worked on the day before.....full moon, lightning or something got them for the time being. You could tell we got desperate at the end of the day, boating 3 blackfin tuna that you might get a can of bumble bee out of!
![]() CALM WEATHER & GREAT TUNA FISHING!
I sure hope rest of the fall season tuna fishing is like what we have right now, which is great fishing earlier than usual. Jerry Dew and his crew from Richmond Va enjoyed sunny weather, calm seas and plenty of action. Started the day with a few small blackfin tuna.....ran north where there was a better sign of fish.....set out and within 15 minutes hooked 8 25 lb yellowfin at one time and his crew boated all of them.....the rest of the day we picked away at some bigger fish, with Kristopher Hare, from Midlothian, Va boated a citation earning 70 lb fish, Jerry boated a 66 lb fish and we had another 50 lb fish as well.
![]() YELLOWFIN AND BLACKFIN TUNA ON A ROUGH DAY!
Ben Machielse and his crew from Medilume, a group involved in the production of the swine flu virus, took a day off from a hectic summer's work and enjoyed an action packed day..... though the bigger yellowfin were not biting as well as they had all week, we did manage to boat 5 up to 62 lbs, along with a bunch of black fin tuna. MIght have had more yellowfins but just about the time they started biting, the wind picked up and conditions deteriorated, and the bite shut off!
![]() DAMM MARLIN ARE JUST TO FAR AWAY!!
We ran around 80 miles on Tuesday, found some good water, but the concentrations of marlin are still north of us and out of range. Boats out of Ocean City and Virginia Beach had outstanding fishing and hopefully these fish will work their way south to us as they typically do. Anyway we had a good day, with Randy Williamson and Mike Stokes from Kill Devil Hills, NC catching a doulbe header of Atlantic Shortbill Spearfish, first ones for the Obsession this year, and Daniel Hensley, from Batavia, Oh catching his first white marlin ever. We also caught a few dolphin and while circling a board catching them a 7 lb tripletail was swimming under it, so we backed up and Mike threw a chuck of bait caught the tasty critter.
![]() BOATLOAD OF BIG YELLOWFINS!
Had a great day of meatfishing today, with lunker yellowfin tuna jumping everywhere. My makeup group boated 650 lbs of fish, including 9 yellowfin tuna, 4 blackfin tuna, and some mahi-mahi. The yellowfin were lunkers.....Joseph Zakrzewski, from Kentucky boated the days largest, an 81 lb fish, and Kenneth Reece, from Ohio and Phillop Fortney, from Pennsylvania each boated 70 lbs..... the others were all 50-65 lb fish.
![]() LES WINNER & ONE OF HIS WHITE MARLIN
Les Winner, from Leesburg, VA and one of the three white marlin he caught on Saturday. With him was Matt Holway (Round Hill, VA), who caught two white marlin, Jerimiah Yotte (South Riding, VA), who caught 2 white marlin, Bryan Downer (Ashburn, Va), who releaed 3 white marlin, and Mikhail, Zubarev (Arlington, VA) who released 4 white marlin.
![]() MIKAIL & ONE OF HIS MARLIN
Mikail Zubarev, from Arlington, Va, with one of the 4 white marlin he released Saturday, when his crew caught 14 white marlin.
![]() WHITE MARLIN FISHING GETS NO BETTER!!!
Les Winner, and crew experienced some of the finest white marlin fishing seen off Oregon Inlet yesterday....His crew released 14 white marlin and we did not catch but one till 10 AM and then things got rocking with a double header, then a quadruple header within 10 minutes, of which we caught two, then we went by some birds and hooked 2 fish but had 5 after us.....got so much line out on those two trying to hook more took forever to get them, and then we finally got going again and hooked some more.....anyway caught 14 out of 20+ bites, jumped off several and raised I do not know how many..... this fishing will likely last only a few more days as the fish are pushing south and when the run into the Gulf Stream within the next week, it will be over....I am not booked until Friday, and am trying to put some groups together, so if you want to come fishing for white marlin, and do not have a group, give me a call anyway....NOW IS THE TIME!
![]() WHAT A SURPRISE....A LIMIT OF YELLOWFIN TUNA!!
Mike Garofalo and his crew from Philadelphia drove all last night to get here....seas were rough from yesterdays northeaster but we headed offshore anyway....could not go north to where the marlin & dolphin have been cause of the rough seas so we headed south where there have been some sporadic catches of yellowfin and we ended up with a great day....started off with a triple header of 50 lb yellowfins, then had a little lull, and then hooked 3 successive 5 bangers of mixed 20-25 lb fish and another 55 lb fish to give us a boxfull/limit of tuna and an early trip home so the guys can drive back to Phily tonight.....them boys are tough!!
![]() LONG BOAT RIDE DOESN'T PAY OFF!
On Tuesday, after a great day of marlin fishing on Monday we headed way offshore as the water temperture shots showed the water the fish had been in to be 20 miles outside the hundred fathom curve, so off we went, and when we got there the fish were gone, so we spread out and fished around finding some good water, but only had one marlin bite and it threw the hook after a few minutes....Jeremy Smith and crew did boat a bunch of nice dolphin howerer.
![]() LONG BOAT RIDE PAYS OFF THIS TIME!
We tried again yesterday, but held further north to get in good water that some Virginia Beach boats had found some fish in the day before......ran 75 miles to hit the 75 degree water, found a sharp change, caught some nice dolphin and then found the marlin around noon and had great fishing till we ran out of time.....David Passmore, RIchmond VA, Dan Couture, Coupeville, WA and Dennis Robke, Holly Springs, NC all released a white marlin and Moby Chaudhary caught 2 white marlin giving us five whites for the day, and we also pulled the hook on a 200 lb blue marlin...dammit!!! Anyway maybe the next northeaster will move the fish a little closer I hope!
![]() STORM MOVES OFF AND WHITE MARLIN FISHING IS OUTSTANDING
After the 4 day northeaster moved off, we finally got offshore yesterday and the white marlin fishing was outstanding. We stopped just short of a warm water change and did not have all the baits in the water when white marlin showed up in the spread.... we hooked three and caught two of those..... Ended up catching 3 double headers along with a three singles to give us nine for the day...... Jim Goff, Virginia Beach, Ken Abby, Leesburg, VA & Joe Hill from Gaithersburg, VA all caught 2 white marlin, while James Vant, Matt Hufnagle & Matt Downer, all from Virginia each caught one. We pulled the hooks on two more and had a few other shots and also boated 30 school dolphin.
![]() FINALLY GOT OUT AFTER NORTHEASTER!
It was still windy and rough but we went fishing anyway.....had a slow day....Kole Budd from Maryland had a white marlin close to the boat ready to get released when the hook pulled. Ryan and Rosemary Budd, from Silver Springs, MD boated a 66 lb yellowfin caught on 30 lb line after a 45 battle. A few boats had decent days on white marlin and a few sailfish, so hopefully things will get going when the weather settles out.
![]() SAILFISH ARE STILL HANGING AROUND!
Debbie Spiro, from Newton, PA and her crew were as reluctant as I was to head offshore this morning, with the wind stiff out of the east and a steady rain falling and forcast for the entire day. Nevertheless we headed offshore, and could not get to where we were trying to get, so we stopped in shallow water around alot of baits and birds and ended up releasing 6 sailfish and a white marlin and some dophin, including 2 15 lb fish. Michael Spiro, Jewan Oh & Daniel Appleton all released one sailfish, Jason Appleton caught 2 sailfish, and Debbie caught a white marlin and a sailfish. In spite of rough miserable weather the crew toughed it out and even caught a triple header of sailfish in very trying conditions!
