Fishing Reports & PhotosWE MADE IT!
Left Miami yesterday morning at 5 AM......chugged to Key West.... got there around noon.....slipped into a commercial dock for some less expensive fuel ($4.51/gal in Key West), took on 500 gallons to give us 720 for the crossing, Richard & I bought 5 lbs of stone crabs, and off we went with 3 other boats....weather was beautiful and crossing easy.... pullled out of Key West at 2 PM and pulled into Enrique Lima's Marina at 10 AM..... calm seas the whole way..... curtains open and no spray on the boat....just the way we like it..... Richard & I were greeted at the dock by the Ballyhoo Bar & Grill waiter with a shot of TEQUILA to welcome us back to our second home..... can't imagine how they knew we might like a quickie....... sometimes life is very good!!
FISHING IS OUTSTANDING DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW......one boat had 70 sailfish bites yesterday...... have Wednesday, Thursday & Friday open... temperture is 80 degrees & the sun is shining! ![]() HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Deckhand Richard Wright and I are tied up at Golden Isle Marina, St Simmons Island, Ga. Our New Year's day run to Southport Marina near Cape Fear, NC was nice but yesterday, with 20-25 knot NW winds, was wet and wild......a long 240 miles and cold 12 hours! With gale warnings and 25-35 knot winds today from here to Cape Canaveral and below, we stayed tied up today to lick our wounds and will head south to Ft Pierce, FL tomarrow, with plans to cross the Gulf of Mexico sometime between this coming Friday and Sunday.
![]() HAPPY DAYS!!
Five weeks after we put her in the shop, we rolled the OBSESSION back to the haul out, and put her back in the water today....all went surprisingly well, and the paint job came out great......Vernon Gilbert & his crew did a fantastic job for a fair and reasonable price...... the only down side to the whole process, as another captain said to me today was that the old girl will never look any better than she does right now!!
![]() Richard & I ran her back to Pirates Cove and will begin loading up and preparing to head to Mexico around the first of the year. PUTTING ALL THE PIECES BACK TOGETHER!!
The painting of the OBSESSION is finished and now we just have to put all the pieces back together.....tomarrow the steel guard along the hull, Thursday the curtains, Friday & Saturday & Sunday the electronics and lights and other incidentals and hopefully we go back in the water Monday or Tuesday. The photos show the last paint being put on the Obsession, the spraying of the non-skid by Jimmy. We will leave her covered up till they finish spraying the boat next to me, the Country Girl, tomarrow night, and then we can begin to uncover the hull. Vernon Gilbert & his crew did a fantastic job, and had her painted in 4 weeks, but could have done it in three, but we had some repairs to deal with.
![]() SALT WATER SPORTSMAN ARTICLE: MID-ATLANTIC TUNA TACTICS BY RICK BURNLEY
![]() OBSESSION CITED IN 'SALT WATER SPORTSMEN'!!
Back in late September and again in mid October, Rick Burnley, from Virginia Beach, rode along on the Obsession when Walt Ogden was filling in for Richard, who was in Canada duck hunting..... we had some very good tuna fishing with Paul Ebert & his crews both dates, and Rick wrote a very interesting article about yellowfin tuna fishing along the mid-Atlantic coast and talked about the days spent fishing with us. The article was published in SALT WATER SPORTSMEN magazine in the January, 2012 edition which has just come out.
![]() HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
Boat work at Vernon Gilbert's boat shop is going very well.....the hull has been primed and topcoated and looks great...... the bridge and the hardtop have been primed and will be topcoated on Tuesday..... the cockpit, cabin sides and bow deck will be the next and final stage..... all the componants of the bait box, which is being replaced have been made and fitted and and will be glued into place in the next day or so....Vernon, who used to build boats with Captain Buddy Canady, and his crew are doing a great job and are very hard workers.
![]() FALL TUNA FISHING PHOTOS
Thanks to David Logan for some photos of his fishing trip in late October......lousy weather but excellent fishing as we filled the box with yellowfin and blackfin tuna.
![]() BOATWORK PROGRESSING RAPIDLY!
Work on the OBSESSION is going pretty well and rather fast, which is good... Since hauling out last Monday, the hull and hardtop were sanded, repaired, prepped and faired and yesterday three coats of primer were sprayed on it......Plan is tomorrow to sand primed area and put final coats of paint on hull, than wrap it up and begin work on cabin, cockpit and bridge.
![]() SIX WEEKS OF TLC FOR THE OBSESSION
Richard and I took everything off the OBSESSION yesterday, and we hauled her out this morning over at John Bayliss's boatyard, pressure washed the bottom and Johns crew trucked her over to Vernon Gilberts boat shed where we will spend the next 5-6 weeks putting a fresh coat of paint on the OBSESSION.
![]() LAST FISHING TRIP FOR 2011!
Jose Tores Vorsheim & Ben Malchiese & crew from the lab that produces the vaccine for the swine flu, amoung other things, fished with us on Saturday and had a decent afternoon on the tunas, after a slow morning and a hour steam to more productive waters, as the crew boated a double and a triple header and to end the day a quadruple header of 30 lb yellowfin tuna.
![]() FISHING TOMARROW..... FLEA MARKET ON SATURDAY
Weather permitting we will be fishing the next three days.
ON THIS COMING SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12 at the Pavillion over at Pirates Cove Marina, there will be a FISIHING TACKLE FLEA MARKET..... This will be open to all, and held between 7 AM and 10 AM, and there should be some great deals on HUNTING GEAR AND FISHING TACKLE. FISHING AGAIN!
Frank King & his crew drove 8 hours from western Virginia on Sunday in hopes we could get offshore...... I was worried about getting across the bar and out the inlet with 7 ft seas yesterday morning but the tide was coming in we were able to pick our way carefully out the inlet and with one other charterboat went looking for tuna...... found good conditions and had some action.... Frank & his crew boated a single tuna, then boated 4 out of 5 we had on at one time, and then another triple header..... young Joey Blake, from Virginia, on his first offshore fishing trip boated a 30 lb yellowfin and a late season dolphin.
![]() HUGH SEAS AND NO FISHING!
Been 2 weeks since any of the Oregon Inlet fleet has gotten offshore due to windy conditions, with the last few days of gale force winds 40-50 mph and impressive seas along the beach 13-17 ft for the last 3 days.....conditions are moderating right now, and I am hoping to get out tomarrow. I have a few trips this upcoming weekend, and then I will be hauling the boat out of the water and spending the next 6 weeks putting a new coat of paint on the Obsession, with plans to get back in the water just before Christmas, and heading to Mexico around New Years Day.....if all goes according to plan....HA HA!! Still have some very good dates available in Mexico. ![]() MAKEUP GROUP HAS GOOD AFTERNOON ACTION!
I put a group together, including Andrew Faron, from Kansas City, Gary & David , & Mike Phillips & wife. Mikes wife caught the biggest fish, a 35 lb wahoo, and the rest of the crew boated a mixed bag of blackfin tuna in the morning and seven 20-30 lb yellowfin tuna in the afternoon.
![]() LATE DAY YELLOWFIN ACTION!
Water & sea conditions were good but the great morning blackfin tuna bite was not as good this morning, at least for us....caught a few but lot of shagging grass for not many bites, so we worked out to the deeper water and got lucky....hooked a single, than another, than a tripleheader, and then Marlin Reinbold & crew ended the day with a quadruple header for a great afternoon.....yellowfin were 20-35# class fish.
![]() TUNA, TUNA & MORE TUNA!!
Dave Logan, Tom Palmer & crew from around Washington DC had steady action from blackfin tuna in the morning, and boated 4 yellowfin in the 25-45 lb range in the afternoon.
![]() NEED ONE PERSON FOR TRIP ON WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 26!
FISHING is good, LONG RANGE WEATHER looks good, and I have 4 guys who need one more person to join them this WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 26..... would be $350/person.... if interested, call me ....252-480-0094 between 7-9 PM since we are fishing the next 4 days!
LOTS OF ACTION!!
Lloyd Koser & crew from Daytona Beach Florida, catch plenty of quality fish off the Florida coast, but not many tuna.....came fishing with Richard & I today cause they wanted to catch tuna.....they caught a plenty of them too, as we had steady blackfin action all morning, and then went looking for yellowfins in the afternoon and caught 8 of them for a great finish to an action packed day!
