Fishing Reports & PhotosUNBELIEVABLE MARLIN BITE!
Joey Tillman and his crew released 19 white marlin today!!! Every boat at Pirates Cove had from 13-22 releases.... best fishing any of us remember....hopefully it holds up....sounds like more fish north of us!
![]() BEST WHITE MARLIN FISHING I HAVE EVER SEEN!!
I tried to discourage Ken & Ken Henry from coming cause thought the hurricane would screw up the fishing.... glad they did not listen to me .....we ran a long ways, but had the best day of white marlin fishing ever on the OBSESSION..... Ken & Ken from New Jersey released 24 white marlin, including three triple headers and one quadruple header.... never seen anything like it....when they came in there it was in hungry wolf packs.... probably had 40 chances, but i lost count of misses. Best day Richard & I have ever had, as it was for Ken & Ken who hooked many of the fish on their own tackle.
I have 3 folks and need 2-3 more for a trip on Thursday....weather looks great and marlin fishing may be as well!! We ran out of white marlin flags!! ![]() MARLIN ARE STILL HERE AND GREAT FISHING GETTING CLOSER!
I told Larry Fratesi & Candice Whirley, from Tennessee, fishing would not be good after hurricane, but the said they were coming anyway and things worked out.... Larry earned 3 citations, two for white marlin he released and and one for 79 lb yellowfin he boated after a hourlong battle on light tackle.... Candice caught and released a white marlin as well.
Virginia Beach boats relocated the big body of white marlin which are now in range of Oregon Inlet, so we could have some great fishing this weekend with good weather forcast... I am booked thru Wednesday but open on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. HURRICANE BLUES
With marlin fishing good here and 5 miles of them off Ocean City, this Hurricane was the last thing we needed..... but it moved fast so maybe it will not screw us up to bad.... we have a trip on Sunday and Tuesday so we will be out there looking for them.
On Wednesday, with the storm coming, the marinas asked us all to leave for safer spots, so, while most boats ran to Wanchese to haul out, we ran up to Coinjock to tie up in more protected waters. We will get the boat tomarrow and head be back at Pirates Cove in the afternoon, preparing for fishing on Sunday. The storm hit us last night around 3 AM and is subsiding now around noon ....winds reached around 60- 70 miles an hour here in Nags Head....no big deal... only damage we sustained was one broken pine tree..... Seas at Diamond Shoals reached 26 ft in 75 mph winds and 17 feet along Nags Head Beaches.... checked that out earlier and did not see much damage.... hope waters are not to screwed up and fish are biting Sunday! GREAT PHOTOS
The following photos are from Spencer Whites fishing trip last week.
![]() BOXFUL OF MEAT AND BILLFISH!
John Eick & crew from Raleigh had action of some sort all day long, starting the day boating 45 dolphin around a basket, boating 2 out of 4 yellowfin on very light tackle.....pulled the hook on one, broke a hook in another aftet 40 minutes and put 2 in the boat after 1 hour battles, the fish weighing 58 & 68 lbs..... we ended up with a limit of dolphin as the kept hitting us all day long and David Rust, Sean Sullivan & Rick Bollich released white marlin while Bob Goldstein released a sailfish.
![]() OBSESSION WINS SMALL FIVE BOAT TOURNAMENT!
The Hopewell, Va anglers club tournament included the Obsession and 4 other boats in a one day fun tournament, with the anglers hooking their own fish. After a rough start, where we had half four or five white marlin get after us in one circle, the guys hooked two, but unfortunately both jumped around a bit and threw the hooks. Things settled down after that and they hooked 3 or the next five opportunities, and Charles Marks, Sheriff Anderson, and Craig Stronsnider, all from Hopewell, VA, all hooked and caught white marlin to put us in first place for the day.
MARLINS AND DOLPHINS
Nick Bocchicchio and crew from Deleware had great weather and good fishing. Started off Friday with some bad luck as we had 3 or 4 white marlin get after us and we hooked 2 which after 5 minutes each pulled the hook. Then things got better as we found a school of very nice size dolphin. Later in the day, Steven Huges, Matthhwe McCullum, and Sean McCullum all released white marlin.
![]() BEST MARLIN FISHING OF THE YEAR!
Weather was beautiful, seas were calm, and the marlin were biting.....we had around 15 bites and David and Spencer White, from Coppell, Texas released 8 white marlin and a sailfish, our best day of the year, including two double headers.
With reports of lots of marlin north of us, looks like we could be in for another great September of marlin fishing.... it likely has not even hit its peak around here.... I have too many open days still in September, and if you want to go but do not have a full group, call me cause I have several individuals looking to join other groups.... 252-480-0094 or email captjeff@mindspring.com ![]() THREE GENERATIONS CATCH WHITE MARLIN!
Fred Kessler, from Long Valley, NJ , his dad Fred, and eight year old son Jonathan all caught and released white marlin. Also, Joseph Fernandes and 11 year old son Matthew and 6 year old son Alex all caught and released white marlin. For all it was their first white marlins ever, Alex is the youngest guy to catch one on the Obsession, and they also caught three at one time.
![]() MAKEUP GROUP HAS GREAT DAY!
Jim McCurtain from Washington DC & his crew teamed up with Dan Spencer and his friend to put a group together for two days of fishing. We found a pallet to start today off that was loaded with big school dolphin and the guys caught their limit in short order. Glen Garner, from Haymarket VA released a white marlin and Danny Rinker, from Manassas, VA released one of the smallest sailfish we have ever caught....might have weighed 4 pounds....hopefully the send me a photo that I can show ya'll....was a cute little thing that swam away nicely!
![]() VIRGINIA BEACH BILLFISH TOURNAMENT BUST FOR OBSESSION!
Charles Spangler and crew from Charlottesville, VA fished with us and all did a great job of angling, catching two white marlin the first day and a white and a 150 lb blue marlin the next day. Unfortunately that was not enough.... we had some chances but did not convert several opportunities each day and with the competitive field of boats, high percentage hookup rates is what it takes to win. I personally was terrible, hooking a white my only shot the first day, but I missed two the second day, and another fish threw the hook as I was passing the rod down the second day.
BILLFISH FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!
![]() Kevin Eipp Sr, from Syracuse NY, with daughter Ashley & son Kevin & their friends Ellen Gerard & Shawn all earned citations for catching & releasing 4 white marlin and one sailfish......pulled off a blue marlin and 3 other white marlin in an action packed day.....marlin fishing starting to heat up and should get better and better towards a mid September peak. Richard and I will be heading up to Virginia Beach tomarrow after dropping our charter off at Pirates Cove.....we will be fishing the 2 out of 3 day Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament competing against 75 other boats. NEED ANGLERS TO FILL UP BOAT!!
ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY AUGUST 23 & 24 I NEED 3-4 MORE ANGLERS TO FILL UP THE BOAT. SHOULD BE GOOD MARLIN FISHING AND DOLPHIN AND TUNA HAVE BEEN SPORADIC BUT WILL BE A GOOD POSSIBILITY.... CALL ME (252-480-0094) or EMAIL (captjeff@mindspring.com) IF INTERESTED IN JOINING THE GROUP.
![]() WHAT A BUMMER!!!
Along with a number of other contending boats, we headed to a new spot and it turned out to be the days hot spot.... for most everyone but us!!! Top boats in the area caught 3-5 billfish all around us, while we saw one lazy window shopper all day! Two boats that were behind us at the start of the day passed us, so we ended up in a tie for fifth place, out of the money while a boat that caught three and had less then us to start the day took third place and a pocket full of change home...... Very frustrating being in good position, the right spot and in contention and coming up with nothing.... maybe next week in Virginia tournament things will go our way.... been close the last two tournaments but no damm cigar!!
IN THE HUNT FOR SECOND OR THIRD PLACE
We took a lay day on Wednesday, and then fished on Thursday..... Mike Flower, from Medina, NY & Peter Zeliff from Batavia, NY caught a double header of white marlin in the morning, and then in torrential rains in a thunderstorm, Michael LaFramboise, from Canton, MI released a white marlin in the last half hour to put us in a tie for third place with one day to go!
FIRST DAY OF PIRATES COVE BILLFISH TOURNAMENT
Larry Waite was our allstar today, catching 2 sailfish and a white marlin. We pulled the hook on a second white marlin near the end of the day and then pulled the hook on a small blue marlin..... One boat found a honey hole and caught 7 white, all between noon and 2 PM to put him in first, 4 boats caught 4 and 3 or 4 more including us caught 3 billfish for the first day.
ON day 2 we took a lay day so we will be fishing the next two days....have our work cut out for us.....Today the fishing was a little slower. A GREAT FIRST OFFSHORE FISHING TRIP!
Scott Reese & family, from Farmington, NY had never been fishing offshore so Monday was a great introduction......weather was sunny & seas were calm....we set out in shallow water and soon got hit by the yellowfin tuna.....hooked one on a big bait and two on very light tackle white marlin rigs..... pulled the hook on one, but Franklin Reese did a great job boating one on light tackle which weighed 65 lbs, while Scott boated one that earned him a citation as it weighed 70 lbs. Bradley Reese and Franklin Reese each caught and released white marlin later in the day, and we also got jumped by a school of nice size dolphin.
![]() ALICE KELLY LADIES MARLIN TOURNAMENT!
Some days just don't go your way. The winning boat saw 5 marlin and caught 5 marlin. The first white marlin we raised I had jumping but the hook pulled while I was passing the rod down; the second white marlin we raised I just flat out missed....BOOOO!! The third marlin we raised was a small blue marlin and I hooked that and we fought it for 5 minutes when the line went slack.... leader came back with no hook.... bit or cut off! The fourth marlin we raised was a white marlin that Monica Witt, from Nags Head NC caught and released.....finally!!; The fifth marlin we raised came to a teaser but would not switch off.... the next marlin Richard hooked and after 15 minutes we had it 15 feet from getting the leader and the hook came out...... OH WELL.... the weather was beautiful, the girls had a great time and were rather drunk by the time we got back to the dock!!
